Rakhi Envelopes

Raksha Bandhan is a festival celebrating the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. The day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill. 'Raksha Bandhan' literally means 'a bond of protection', Raksha Bandhan is a pledge from brothers to protect the sister from all harms and troubles and a prayer from the sister to protect the brother from all evil.

The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Sravana month that usually falls in August every year.

India Post introduced stout and in some places cloth lined envelopes for safe transit of 'rakhi' in 2004. This was preceded by experimental issue of Rakhi envelopes at Nagpur, Maharashtra since 2001. These un-stamped envelopes priced between Rs 2 and Rs 3 were issued in the postal circles where Raksha Bandhan festival is celebrated. In the year 2006 India Post brought out four designs on DuPont Tyvek that is tear resistant, waterproof and light weight material. These are priced at Rs 5 each.
